Hiking to Burg Eltz – May 2024

In May 2024, I set out for a hike to Burg Eltz, as a preparation for my real wilderness trekking adventure in Bulgaria at the end of June.

I started early in the morning. A soft fog still hung over the fields, and the trails were muddy from the heavy rains of the previous days. It felt wonderfully quiet—until I arrived at the castle, I didn’t cross paths with a single person.

Arriving at Burg Eltz was an incredible experience. The castle revealed itself gradually through the mist, and the view was absolutely breathtaking. Since it was still early, only a handful of people were around, which made it feel almost magical. I took my time wandering around, taking photos, and simply soaking in the atmosphere.

As the morning progressed, the area started to get busier. Buses arrived, filled with tourists eager to see the castle. I continued my hike, following the streams that had turned wild from all the recent rain. There’s something incredibly peaceful about sitting on a bench and listening to water rush over rocks—it’s a moment to pause and just be present.

Of course, no adventure is complete without a little mishap. I eventually took a wrong turn, leading me up a very steep path. I’m still not entirely sure it was meant to be a path, but it added a bit of unexpected challenge to the hike.

Overall, it was an unforgettable morning. The combination of quiet early hours, the dramatic scenery, and the beauty of Burg Eltz made this hike a perfect warm-up for my upcoming wilderness trek.
