Today was my first day in Winterberg, Germany. I’m staying in a cozy apartment for a week, ready to explore the trails and hills in the area.

The first hike started like a dream—sun shining, gentle breeze, perfect summer temperatures. The trail was only about 18 kilometers, but with inclines I hadn’t tackled in a while, it already felt like an adventure.

As I climbed higher, the weather started shifting. Clouds gathered, darkening the sky behind me. And then I saw it—lightning flashing across the horizon. My pace quickened, adrenaline kicking in. Just when the first drops began, I spotted a small wooden shelter and made it there just in time. Moments later, rain poured down in sheets, and thunder echoed through the hills. Once the storm moved on, a thick fog rolled over the landscape, turning the hills into a quiet, mysterious world.

The wildlife was an unexpected bonus. Rabbits darted through the meadows, and deer peeked out from the forest. One of them startled me, suddenly appearing only a few meters away—heart racing, It froze before it calmly bounded back into the trees.

Winterberg already feels like a hidden gem for hikers—peaceful trails, dramatic scenery, and plenty of moments that make you feel alive and connected to nature. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings.
