In June I decided to hike up to Burgruine Hohengeroldseck, a beautiful castle ruin in the Black Forest. The route was around 18 kilometers with 600 meters of incline, and because it was a hot summer day with temperatures above 30°C, I knew it was going to be a tough one.
I started early, and that turned out to be the best decision. When I reached the ruins, the sun was still low, the air was quiet, and I realized I had the entire castle to myself. No tourists, no noise—just me, old stones, and the sound of birds in the forest. There’s something special about standing in a place with so much history and having it completely alone.
From the top of the ruins, the view surprised me. In the distance, through the morning haze, I could see the mountain ranges in France. It gave the whole moment a peaceful, almost surreal feeling.
After exploring the castle, I continued my hike through the area. Some sections were steep, and with the heat, it turned into a solid workout for the legs. But the combination of forest paths, open views, and the early castle visit made it one of my favorite hikes of the trip.
If you’re in the Black Forest and want a mix of history and a challenging hike, Hohengeroldseck is definitely worth it.
