A Day Trip to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg – Stepping Into Medieval France

In June this year, while spending a week exploring the beautiful Black Forest region in Germany, I decided to do something a little different. Since France was just across the border, and because I’ve always loved castles and medieval history, the choice was obvious: take a day trip and visit a real French fortress.

That’s how I ended up at Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, one of the most impressive castles in the Alsace region.

Crossing Into France

One of the things I love about Europe is how easy it is to cross into another country. Within a short drive from my stay in the Black Forest, the landscape slowly changed—Germany’s dark pine forests transformed into the rolling hills and vineyards of Alsace.

Even from a distance, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is hard to miss. It stands proudly on top of a mountain at 757 meters, overlooking the entire Rhine valley. Seeing it for the first time felt like spotting a fortress straight out of a fantasy movie.

Arriving at the Castle

After a scenic drive up winding mountain roads, I reached the entrance. The first thing that hits you is the sheer size of the place. Thick stone walls, high towers, wooden walkways—it feels like stepping into the 12th century.

Inside the courtyard, everything looks incredibly well preserved. The castle was rebuilt in the early 1900s, which explains why it’s in such good shape, but it still maintains an authentic medieval atmosphere.

What Makes This Castle Special

I’ve visited quite a few castles during my travels, but Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg has something unique:

It’s big, dramatic, and sits on a perfect mountaintop location

The combination of German and French architectural elements makes it stand out

You get a real sense of medieval life—not just ruins, but a complete fortress

It feels like a fortress that could easily appear in a historical movie or a Game of Thrones episode.

A Perfect Half-Day Adventure

The visit took a few hours, including walking around the exterior and enjoying the panoramic views. Afterward, I drove back through Alsace’s small villages, grabbed a snack, and returned to the Black Forest before evening.

If you’re staying anywhere near the southwest of Germany and enjoy castles like I do, this day trip is absolutely worth it.
